Indeed, I went through 6 months of hell, helplessly watching my mother pass in a similar fashion. She started smoking at the age of 15, tried numerous times to stop, better never really did until it was too late. Not only are tobacco chemicals highly poisonous, it is their potent addiction that keeps the tobacco companies rubbing their filthy mits together.

Us non-smokers might say "It's all about choice", but for a smoker who made a foolish decision at an impressionable age, does the addictive nature of these chemicals actually give them choice?

I am all for initiatives like "SmokeFree", but statistic show this is not enough. We can only hope that someday, somehow all this suffering will come back on these tobacco swines to haunt them.

What I do find disturbing though, is now that we DO have the knowledge, why do our children still take up smoking...?!

I am sorry to learn of your loss, Wayne. It is a cruel disease. I wholeheartedly agree with you in your condemnation of the cynical marketing strategies of tobacco companies. The Green Party lost my support when they promoted the legalisation of smoking marijuana-it is many more time carcinogenic than smoking tobacco.
