If like me, you've been getting really aggravated trying to paste standard length URL's as links into Twitter, then you'll be glad to hear there is a simple fix.
Twitter has an inbuilt conversion program from bit.ly that automatically shortens URL's before posting. That's great, but it still doesn't help if the standard URL is so long that it leaves hardly any of the 140 characters for your message after you paste it into the tweet block.
You can actually set up your own bit.ly account and shorten URL's before you paste them into Twitter. That way you get to ramble on with the rest of your allocated 140 characters. For example, one of my blog post URL's that I wanted to tweet about is
http://www.boldhorizon.co.nz/brand-marketing-blog/index.php/social-networking-integration.
You can imagine how little space I had left to add my comment in the tweet once this puppy had been pasted in (51 characters to be precise).
The shortened URL after converting it through bit.ly became bit.ly/gmnyw. Pretty cool and a lot friendlier.
Not only does bit.ly show how many clicks your tweet link had, but it also shows geolocation of the clicks, referrers, trending charts etc and allows you to append meta keywords for each individual tweet.
It's a lifesaver for tweeters. Here's the link.
