Even without the new anti-spam laws prohibiting the sending of unsolicited emails, communicating on a non-permission basis is not very effective. Besides the legal requirement of obtaining opt-in approval by recipients, opt-in allows you to open a channel of communication whereby the recipient looks forward to hearing from you.
Blogs take opt-in to a new level in as much as the recipients will find you through viral networking and online referrals, rather than you having to find them and obtain their permission to communicate. Permission is implicit in them subscribing to your blog.
Blogs subscribers decide what they want to receive and control how they receive your blog posts (depends on the RSS reader they use). They can also unsubscribe of their own free will without fear of being locked into a mailing list that continues to send them unwanted emails (haven't we all experienced this).
For marketers, blogging gives you a powerful permission marketing platform. It may take a little longer to develop a subscriber base compared to buying a list, but you will ultimately have a more devoted following (so long as you continue to provide valuable articles and blog posts of course).
Besides, a content-rich blog is also highly valued by Google and will enhance your search engine rankings.
