Anchor text is the word/s that you use in a hyperlink. So for example, if I wanted to create a targeted backlink from your site to mine, I might build a link that resembles this – ‘Contact Bold Horizon for the best advice on brand marketing’.

The anchor text in this case is ‘advice on brand marketing’ because I want to be found and ranked for the keyphrase ‘brand marketing’. (If you include all of the words in the anchor text it will read poorly and also not be as clearly indicative to Google).

So the actual link code that I would then ask you to place on your site would look like this…
    Inbound link
(target=blank makes the link open up in a new browser window so that you don’t lose the visitor from your page).

In most CMS systems you can create a hyperlink without adding code. The words that you specify for the link become the anchor text by default.

If you are interested in this subject, I am holding a Google optimisation workshop on the 7th Oct here at the Innovation Park.
